What to put on an invoice

There's no single federal rule for what an invoice must show. What matters is that it's clear and that any sales tax follows your state's rules. A good invoice has:

  • Your business name and how to reach you
  • The customer's name (and address, if you have it)
  • An invoice number and the date. Our free invoice number generator remembers where you're up to.
  • What you did or sold, with the amounts
  • Sales tax, if your state requires it on what you sell
  • The total due, the due date and how to pay you

Questions

Can I use them in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the Word file to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs.

What's the difference between an estimate and an invoice?

An estimate (or quote) is your price before the work, for the customer to accept. An invoice asks for payment after the work is done.

Are they really free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no watermark. Use them as often as you like.

Can Invoice & Quote fill one in for me?

Yes. Snap a photo of your notes or say the job out loud, check the preview, and it's $1 for the PDF, or $0.20 each with a pack.
